Colorado School of Mines Technology Waiver
The Colorado School of Mines Technology Waiver is composed of two parts:
- Technology Resource Access Agreement for Affiliated Programs
- Information for Parents/Guardians Regarding Technology Resource Access

Technology Resource Access Agreement for Affiliated Programs
Introduction
The Colorado School of Mines ("Mines") provides technology resources, including but not limited to computer accounts and internet access, to participants of Mines or affiliated programs for the purpose of promoting academic excellence through resource sharing, innovation, and communication. Users of these resources are required to utilize them in an ethical and legal manner. Violation of the provisions outlined herein will result in termination of access. It is hereby acknowledged that all Mines technology resources are the property of the Colorado School of Mines, and users shall have no expectation of privacy in the use of these resources or the data stored within them.
Guidelines for Use
Mines technology resources are provided solely to support and enhance the academic experience of affiliates and program participants. Users are required to be present while utilizing public lab spaces, computer systems, or terminals. The following actions are strictly prohibited:
- Utilizing Mines technology resources for business or personal financial gain
- Intentionally causing disruption to computing operations, information systems, or networks
- Violating software licensing agreements or copyright laws
- Compromising system security or resource availability
- Infringing upon the privacy of other individuals
- Transmitting material that may be deemed offensive
Violations of these terms will result in the revocation of technology resource access and may lead to disciplinary or legal action.
Privileges and Responsibilities
The use of Mines technology resources is a privilege. Mines leadership and system administrators retain the authority to determine what constitutes inappropriate use and to execute final decisions regarding access termination. Users are expected to adhere to general rules of network use, including but not limited to:
- Refraining from abusive or offensive communications
- Avoiding the use of inappropriate language
- Protecting personal information and that of other Mines community members
- Refraining from actions that may be construed as illegal activity
- Preserving network availability for other users
Security Protocols
Users who identify security issues must immediately notify soc@mines.edu or call the Mines Service Center at 303-384-2345. Attempts to reproduce or demonstrate such issues to other users are prohibited. The following actions are strictly forbidden:
- Sharing access credentials
- Accessing accounts not explicitly assigned for use
- Any unauthorized access or access attempts to technology resources
Violations will result in access revocation and may lead to disciplinary or legal action. Users identified as security risks may be denied access to Mines resources.
Vandalism
Vandalism, including but not limited to physical harm to equipment, malicious data manipulation or destruction, and the creation or downloading of malware, will result in the revocation of technology resource access and may lead to disciplinary or legal action.
Penalties
Intentional, repeated, or egregious violations of these policies will result in the loss of resource access. Appropriate disciplinary or legal action may be taken as applicable.
Information for Parents/Guardians Regarding Mines Technology Resource Access
Technology resource access is provided to your child (hereinafter the “Student”) participating in affiliated programs to promote academic excellence. While the valuable information and interaction available through these resources far outweigh potential risks, parents and guardians should be aware that Mines does not provide content filtering for internet access.
The Student will have access to various resources, including but not limited to:
- Email, chat, social media, and other interactive communication platforms
- Worldwide websites, including those with adult themes
- Public domain and shareware software
- Discussion groups and global news sources
- University library content and other academic databases
Proper use of Mines technology resources depends on the responsible conduct of users. Parents and guardians are encouraged to emphasize to your Student the importance of ethical and legal use of these resources. Violation of the provisions outlined in Mines technology resource use agreements will result in the Student's immediate termination of access and may lead to disciplinary or legal action.
Acknowledgment and Agreement
By signing this document, I confirm that I have read, understood, and agree to the following:

- Colorado School of Mines: Information for Parents/Guardians Regarding Technology Resource Access
I acknowledge my responsibilities regarding the use of Mines technology resources and sharing it with my Child. I further understand that failure to fulfill these responsibilities may result in restricted or terminated access for my Child. Furthermore, I accept financial responsibility for any damage to equipment or property at the Colorado School of Mines resulting from my Child's actions.
